Gateway Signs
Sept 9, 2026 - Woodlands County Replacing Highway 43 Gateway Signs This Fall
Woodlands County will be replacing its two main gateway signs along Highway 43 this fall as part of a capital project aimed at enhancing community identity, improving safety, and creating a welcoming first impression for residents and visitors. The existing signs, which are estimated to be more than 30 years old, have reached the end of their useful life and are showing significant signs of wear, including peeling paint, deteriorating reflective lettering, and structural aging.
The two Highway 43 signs are among six gateway signs located at County boundaries and were identified as being in the poorest condition following an inspection. While the signs currently meet provincial alignment standards, further assessment determined that repairs would be difficult due to their age and condition. After reviewing options, Council approved a $125,000 capital budget to replace the signs with modern, durable structures designed to better withstand Alberta's climate while reducing long-term maintenance requirements.
The new signs will reflect Woodlands County's brand and rural character while improving visibility for travellers entering the region. Gateway signage plays an important role in community pride, tourism, and economic development by helping create a positive first impression and reinforcing a strong sense of place. If funding remains after the Highway 43 replacements are completed, Administration will explore replacing additional gateway signs elsewhere in the County.
As part of the project, Woodlands County is also celebrating a unique connection to its visual identity. The County logo featured on the gateway signs was originally designed by a County employee who continues to work for the organization today, making this project a meaningful opportunity to carry forward a symbol that has represented Woodlands County for decades while updating its appearance for future generations.
Blue Ridge Lagoon Dredging
Work is underway at the Blue Ridge wastewater lagoon treatment facility to remove and properly dispose of accumulated wastewater sludge from two lagoon cells — the Facultative Cell and the Storage Cell.
Why do we dredge the lagoon?
So, what is that big bladder doing there? 👀
The dredger works much like a giant vacuum, drawing the accumulated sludge from the bottom of the lagoon and transferring it into the large geotextile dewatering bladder.
Once inside the bladder, the liquid gradually seeps out through the material, leaving the solids behind. This process reduces the volume of material that needs to be handled and allows the remaining sludge to be properly managed and disposed of.
It’s a pretty interesting process, and a good example of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into maintaining our wastewater infrastructure. 💧
